Glyphosate (Roundup®) shortage
looms large
Prices have tripled, and we don’t expect much new product by this spring.
Prices for glyphosate and glufosinate have gone through the roof as supplies have been low and are forecast to be low going into this spring.
Multiple factors are to blame, says Dwight Lingenfelter, Extension weed specialist with Penn State. They include lingering supply chain issues from the COVID-19 pandemic, getting enough phosphorus mined to make glyphosate, container and transportation storages, and the shutdown and reopening of a major Bayer Crop Sciences plant in Louisiana because of Hurricane Ida.
“It’s just a whole combination of factors going on right now,” Lingenfelter says. Generic glyphosate that went for $12.50 per gallon in 2020, he says, is now going for between $35 and $40 per gallon. Glufosinate, which could be bought for between $33 and $34 per gallon, is now going for upward of $80 per gallon. If you’re lucky enough to get some herbicide ordered, be prepared to wait.
Peat Moss Shortage
3 Reasons for Current Peat Shortages
How did we get here? In simplest terms, there are three primary factors causing peat shortages for cultivators.
- Logistical Problems
There simply aren’t enough trucks, boats, and ports to transport and deliver goods while the world is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m sure you’ve seen the news stories, and these logistical problems are affecting every industry.
- Not One but Two Bad Peat Harvests
Most cultivators rely on peat suppliers from Northern Canada. Unfortunately, those Northern Canadian suppliers haven’t harvested enough peat to meet the growing demand for the past two years.
The first bad peat harvest was caused by COVID-19. With quarantines and shutdowns, there wasn’t the human power needed to harvest peat crops properly. When it was time for the next harvest, excessive rain caused another bad peat harvest.
- Laws Restricting Peat Harvesting
After two bad harvests, most growers would try to make up the difference in good years. However, peat cultivators in Canada don’t have that option. Canadian regulations limit how much peat can be harvested each season, so it’s impossible to make up a loss in the following season.
Peat shortage problems and supply chain delays are forcing most of the industry to raise their prices significantly or stop taking orders from existing or new customers.
Alternatives to Peat Moss Are Available
Peat moss is probably what most people think of to “fix” or improve their soil if you add peat moss to sandy soil to improve its water and nutrient holding ability and add peat to clay to loosen it up and improve its drainage.
Peat and other “quick fix” options like compost and topsoil do work, but only for a short time. The problem is that, like any organic material, these options decompose, and as they break down, they quit working. They can actually result in poor drainage and an even bigger problem in any kind of soil.
Turface and Pro’s Choice, on the other hand, have ceramic particles that don’t decompose or break down over time. The balanced structure and pore space they create in any soil are permanent.

SureGuard® SC
REDUCE LABOR AND COSTS WITH THE LONGEST RESIDUAL CONTROL.
SAVE TIME, MONEY AND LABOR
- Apply once: longest residual pre-emerge control, often 8 months or more
- Easy mix, apply and clean liquid formulation saves time
- Non-staining spray formulation with no color, odor, off-target movement or volatility concerns
- Reduce customer call-backs with lasting broad-spectrum control
GAIN FLEXIBILITY AND OPTIONS
- Wider application window: unlike the competition, SureGuard SC also controls post-emerge weeds up to 2” – if timing is off, emerged weeds are still controlled
- One product for many uses: landscapes, bare ground, aquatics, cracks and crevices, and dormant Bermudagrass
- Mix with glyphosate or glufosinate for fast and effective knockdown with longest residual, even on resistant weeds
GAIN FLEXIBILITY: A WIDER APPLICATION WINDOW
SureGuard® SC offers a significant advantage over the competition, it controls pre-emerge weeds as well as emerged weeds up to 2” high. When application timing is running a little behind, rest assured that both pre- and post-emerge weeds are captured with SureGuard SC.
PRE-EMERGE CONTROL
Make application prior to weed emerge. Do not apply over-the-top of emerged or actively growing ornamentals. Moisture is needed to move SureGuard SC into the soil. Dry weather following application may reduce effectiveness. However, when adequate moisture is received after dry conditions, susceptible germinating weeds will be controlled.
POST-EMERGE CONTROL
For best results, apply to actively growing weeds less than 2” in height. For most effective post-emerge weed control, apply with a surfactant under sunny conditions at temperatures above 65°F. SureGuard SC is rainfast in 1 hour, do not apply if rain is expected within 1 hour.
